Over the next 24 hours, fans of the FIA European Rally Championship will decide whether Basso or Jean-Joseph should make it through to the quarter-final stage.
Part of the championship’s ongoing 70th anniversary celebrations, the ERC Greatest Driver voting is in its second week with Dario Cerrato winning yesterday’s vote against Gunnar Andersson with 79 per cent of the vote.
Luca Rossetti, Kajetan Kajetanowicz, Sobiesław Zasada and Patrick Snijers all made it through to the quarter-finals during the first week of voting.
FIAERC.com used a data-based approach to pick out 12 drivers who have won the European Rally Championship at least two times. Four wildcards, based on their impact during a certain ERC era, were also selected for the voting process. The ERC Greatest Driver, according to your votes, will be revealed on 1 December.
Today’s vote between Basso and Jean-Joseph begins at 11:00 CET.
Basso still going strong after ERC title double
Giandomenico Basso might have turned 50 earlier this year but he’s still going strong with his second-place finish on July’s ERC-counting Rally di Roma Capitale proof that his pace remains potent. European champion in 2006 and again in 2009 driving for the factory Abarth team, the Italian was a rapid exponent of Fiat’s Punto Super 1600 before he stepped up to the Super 2000 equivalent.
Jean-Joseph wins at the start of ERC’s new era
Simon Jean-Joseph became a double European champion when Super 1600 machinery ruled and the series was on the rise following the streamlining of the calendar by moving away from the old coefficient system. Although Jean-Joseph enjoyed strong links with Citroën during his career, his first ERC title was powered by Renault before his move to the rival French firm for 2007, when he was crowned European champion for a second time. The 54-year-old’s links to rallying remain in is role as part of Sébastien Ogier’s gravel crew.
