Date of birth : 02/08/1991
Who is he? Co-driven by Joakim Sjöberg, Fredrik Åhlin has embarked on an ERC Junor Under 28 Championship bid in 2018 driving a LeoVegas World Rally Team ŠKODA Fabia R5 run by British squad CA1 Sport.
From Sweden via Britain: Hailing from Sweden, Åhlin focused on his British championship exploits in 2016 and 2017. He came within a score of taking the title last season, having won three times during the year, only to lose out to Keith Cronin in a thrilling finale on the Isle of Man.
Starting from scratch: Åhlin, who has 21 starts at world championship level, had zero experience of the events that made up his ERC schedule ahead of the Azores Airlines Rallye opener, where he finished a fine second in class in fifth overall.
Schedule on hold: With co-driver Sjöberg’s partner expecting the birth of their second child, Åhlin was a non-starter in Czech Republic and Poland but he returns for the Latvian season-finale and his favoured gravel surface.
Family guidance: Åhlin is the grandson of the late Freddy Kottulinsky, a successful single-seater racer and former Dakar winner. Åhlin’s parents, Jerry Åhlin and Susanne Kottulinsky, were also rally drivers, while Fredrik’s sister Mikaela is a winner in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.
