Born in Scotland but brought up in Western Australia, McRae is the grandson of ERC event winner Jimmy McRae, son of Alister and nephew of the late Colin. When he’s not competing, McRae instructs at a rally school in Scotland. Cameron Fair, the 2023 ERC3 champion co-driver, replaced Mac Kierans as McRae’s wingman for 2024 due to the latter’s work commitments in Australia. They won two Junior ERC rounds, with McRae taking third in the final championship standings.
As well as stepping up to ERC1 in 2025, the Scottish pairing was competin in the British Rally Championship’s top tier for a second season.
What target have you set yourself for JDS Machinery Rali Ceredigion 2026? “I’d like to be setting some competitive stage times with the ERC regulars, but our main aim is to score maximum points for the British championship”
What’s been your best JDS Machinery Rali Ceredigion memory so far? “My best memory was definitely winning the Junior ERC and ERC4 categories in 2024”
Who’s your rallying hero and why? “Obviously I have a few, my dad, grandfather and uncle, Colin. Of course, because it’s family it gives me a lot of motivation”
What’s your greatest achievement in rallying/motorsport so far? “Winning rounds of the Junior ERC and British championship. But, most recently, I’m proud of my performance at the Grampian Forest Rally because we were mixing times with the WRC boys”
Looking back to your first rally, when was it and where, what car did you drive and what happened? “My first rally was in Australia in 2020. Unfortunately, we retired with gearbox problems, but it was the start of a great journey”
If you weren’t a rally driver, what sport would you like to do? “I don’t know what sport I’d do, but I’d love to be a fighter jet pilot for the Royal Air Force”
When you are not competing, what do you do to keep busy? “When I’m not competing, I’m working in my day job, training hard to keep fit and prepping for upcoming rallies”
Tell us something interesting about yourself that few people know? “I lived in Australia for 18 years and moved to Scotland for rallying”
