Abramowski started the Welsh Tarmac event leading fellow Pole Hubert Kowalczyk by 28 points and in the knowledge that he’ll be champion if he outscores his compatriot this weekend.
He was on course to do just that after reaching the finish of SS2 ahead of Kowalczyk in second place only for a technical issue to force his exit 24.2 kilometres from the start of SS3.
Although a restart is planned tomorrow (Sunday) the title is still not guaranteed with Kowalczyk currently in second place behind Eamonn Kelly.
Nineteen-year-old Abramowski started JDS Machinery Rali Ceredigion on the backfoot after a crash in Wednesday testing left his Ford Fiesta Rally3 with significant front-end damage. But his car was fully repaired ahead of the start in Aberystwyth yesterday afternoon.
Prior to the Welsh event getting under way, Abramowski said: “Twelve months ago, competing in the FIA European Rally Championship still felt like a dream. Today we’re in Wales, where at Rali Ceredigion we’ll be fighting for the ERC3 championship. It means a lot to me and shows that the path we’ve chosen is the right one. This weekend we have a very specific job to do. It won’t be easy, but we’re ready for it.”
Abramowski clinched the ERC Fiesta Rally3 Trophy title on last month’s Barum Czech Rally Zlín. He had been due to take up the accompanying Ford Fiesta Rally2 prize drive on JDS Machinery Rali Ceredigon but elected – with M-Sport Poland’s full agreement – to postpone the outing until the Croatia Rally season finale in order to focus on securing the ERC3 title.
