ERC Junior Yates impresses on rare co-driving run
FIA European Rally Championship points-scorer Rhys Yates proved he can do more than just drive when he navigated his brother James on a national rally in his native United Kingdom last weekend, ending up just six seconds shy of victory.
Yates, a podium finisher in FIA ERC Junior Under 28 – the category for young stars in R5 cars – took on co-driving duties for his younger sibling during the Neil Howard Memorial Stages, held at the Oulton Park race circuit on 3 November.
Despite it being James Yates’s fifth rally and first appearance in the family’s Brettex Rally Team ŠKODA Fabia R5, he finished runner-up and was quick to praise his brother’s contribution.
“Considering he has only read pacenotes once before for my dad, he did really well,” James Yates said of brother Rhys. “I’m sure it wasn’t his favourite place to be and I think a few times he wanted to get into my side of the car but I understand that; it’s his car after all. I think I better hand the keys back now.”
Rhys Yates contested four rounds of the ERC in 2018 – his first season at international level – proving his talent on outings with both CA1 Sport and Kresta Racing.
