Llarena: Poland ERC debut my best drive
Rally Team Spain’s Efrén Llarena reckoned his run to second place in the FIA ERC Junior Under 27 Championship on PZM Rally Poland was his best performance so far.
Llarena needed to win his class to stand any chance of claiming the Pirelli-backed title on the season-closing Rally Liepāja. Although he won Sunday’s second leg, it wasn’t enough to prevent Tom Kristensson from claiming victory as their private battle effectively ensured Mārtiņš Sesks was crowned champion*, due to the fact they both came up one point short of being able to still challenge for the title in Latvia.
However, Llarena’s performance on his first high-speed gravel event earned the Spaniard significant praise alongside co-driver Sara Fernández.
“The final loop was difficult,” Llarena explained. “We tried to go fast and catch [Tom] Kristensson but he was very fast and we lost. I think the pace was quite similar [comparing to the first loop].
“We tried to push hard even though we don’t have experience on these kinds of stages. We won eight or nine stages so we’re happy. I think it was the best rally I ever did.”
