Wagner keeps on winning as he warms up for Rally Islas Canarias

Simon Wagner’s status as a potential Rally Islas Canarias winner has been strengthened after the Austrian champion continued his impressive start to his 2022 campaign last month.

After scoring a maiden FIA European Rally Championship podium at the Azores Rallye in March, Wagner returned to Austrian championship duty at the WeinbergerHolz Lavanttal Rallye in early April and promptly took victory.

The result was his second win in as many Austrian championship starts in 2022 and provided the opportunity to practice on asphalt ahead of the sealed-surface Rally Islas Canarias from 12-14 May.

Although the ultra-abrasive roads on Gran Canaria differ considerably to the route around the Austrian town of Wolfsberg, the experience nevertheless provided Wagner and co-driver Gerald Winter the opportunity to gain more competitive kilometres on Tarmac aboard their Eurosol Racing Team Hungary Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo.

Following his WeinbergerHolz Lavanttal Rallye success, Wagner wrote on Facebook: “This win is something special for all of us and besides that, we score maximum points for the championship again. We are just happy and thank you all for the great support both on the stages and in the service park.”

Wagner, who impressed on his way to finishing third at the ERC-counting Azores Rallye, has started Rally Islas Canarias on two previous occasions with a Junior ERC podium the highlight in 2018.

His fellow Austrian Winter co-drove him on both occasions, albeit in Rally4-specification machinery rather than in Rally2 machinery in which they continue to excel.
