Palomo keeps his cool for ERC4 title triumph

Arriving at RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada holding a 14-point advantage at the summit of the standings, Óscar Palomo knew that a solid finish would be sufficient to secure the ERC4 Drivers’ crown – and after safely navigating his way through 12 high-speed stages, the Spaniard was finally able to celebrate.

For a driver with two wins to his name this season, tackling the event in a cautious frame of mind marked a departure from the norm, but it was an approach that paid off richly. Only twice appearing inside the top three on the class timesheets as he paced himself throughout, it was a measured performance that ultimately yielded the coveted championship trophy.

“Coming here, it was very important to me to win the championship,” the home hero reflected, with the pressure lifted from his shoulders at last. “To have actually done it is amazing. I don’t have the words to describe this feeling...”

Laurent Pellier’s dominant display in Catalunya not only delivered the Frenchman a fifth victory of the 2022 campaign, but it also elevated him to second in the championship standings – defeating Andrea Mabellini on countback – and deservedly earned Marine Pelamourgues the Co-Drivers’ title.

Mabellini finished runner-up for the fifth time this season, with Roberto Daprà rounding out the rostrum in third.
