Countdown to ERC Rally Hungary season decider begins

Back on the ERC calendar after a year away, Rally Hungary takes place in the country’s north-easterly Zemplén region from 6 - 8 October and promises to be as exciting as it is challenging.

While the overall, FIA ERC3 and Teams’ titles have been sewn up, the fight for glory in the FIA ERC4 and FIA Junior ERC championships is set to go down to the wire with Italian Roberto Daprà and Romanian Norbert Maior firmly in the mix for European success.

The fourth Rally Hungary to count for the ERC features a 12-stage route over 180.26 timed kilometres.

It begins with a spectacular after dark, head-to-head super special stage at the Rabócsiring rallycross track south of host city Nyíregyháza on Friday 6 October and continues with a further seven stages on Saturday and five on Sunday.

Rally Hungary’s stages use mainly asphalt roads and feature fast and narrow sections often in wooded areas.

The stage surface is famously inconsistent, both in terms of grip levels and construction, while changeable weather in the past meant mud and gravel being dragged onto the road added to the challenge facing the ERC drivers and their teams.

Hungary’s return to the ERC in 2019 – its first appearance in the championship since 2003 and the ERC’s first sealed-surface final round since 2015 – produced an epic title decider with Chris Ingram landing the crown on the final stage.

While multiple national champion Norbert Herzig established himself as one of Hungary’s most successful ERC drivers with a pair of podiums and stage wins during the 2018 season, his younger compatriot Miklós ‘Mixi’ Csomós has emerged as major talent.

Following his breakthrough European podium on Barum Czech Rally Zlín in August, Csomós revved up for his home ERC event with victory on WHB Győr Rally earlier this month, round five of the Hungarian championship. The 30-year-old will be one of the favourites to win Rally Hungary alongside his co-driver Viktor Ban.
