Impressive starts, charging drives and determination as race for Junior ERC glory begins

It wasn’t just the Rally2-driving stars that put on a thrilling show for the fans when last weekend’s V-Híd Rally Hungary hosted the 2024 FIA European Rally Championship season kick-off.

The Hankook-equipped FIA Junior ERC talents also delivered action from the outset as Max McRae claimed a maiden victory diving a Peugeot 208 Rally4. Here’s a reminder of just some of what happened.

Carlberg comes close: On his Junior ERC debut, Swede Calle Carlberg (above) was firmly in the podium fight until a mechanical failure forced him out on the final morning. But not before the ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team driver had left a lasting impression.

Johansson goes on a charge: Having dropped out of contention following a double wheel change on SS6, Mille Johansson (above) made landing stage wins his priority for leg two. And he didn’t disappoint with five fastest stage times out of six on his first outing in gravel in an Opel Corsa Rally4.

Newcomers gain important experience: ACI Team Italian drivers Davide Pesavento and Geronimo Nerobutto were among seven rookies to gain important experience on V-Híd Rally Hungary. Despite myriad technical issues they both reached the finish in sixth and 10th respectively.

Giving up not pictured for Kramer: Alfred Kramer’s (below) refusal to give up after a car-damaging roll on SS6 netted seventh overall followed by Liam Müller and Daniel Polášek, who restarted on Sunday after damaging his Peugeot’s suspension on Saturday’s opening stage.

Vaher makes an impact: Restricted to three Junior ERC outings only this season due to being too young to drive in several European countries – he’s only 17 – Jaspar Vaher (below) certainly made an impact on his second Junior ERC start aboard his Ford Fiesta Rally4. He was fastest four times and held the lead until tyre damage on SS6 dropped him back prior to his charging recovery drive to second place.
