ERC ace Cais: mountain bike past held me back on Rally Islas Canarias

Erik Cais has admitted his former career as a downhill mountain bike racer counted against a top result on round two of the FIA European Rally Championship, Rally Islas Canarias.

Cais finished 14th on the high-grip Tarmac event earlier this month aboard the ACCR Orsák Rally Sport Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 he shares with co-driver Igor Bacigál.

And while he’d hoped for – and would ordinarily have been expected to deliver – a stronger result, Cais conceded the nature of the roads on Gran Canaria, which are constructed from volcanic lava, plus the dry and consistent weather conditions, ultimately held him back.

“It was quite difficult,” the 24-year-old Michelin-equipped driver said. “Definitely I was trying my best but I am more about the pure rallying in the woods, this is more circuit racing and you have to be precise everywhere. It’s not that I am complaining but in my previous life I was not in circuit racing or karting or something like that so maybe I am missing something because the grip is really good and you can brake really, really late. I have to think about this because I still need to learn.”

He continued: “It was probably not the rally that I want to remember but at least we know where we need to build our confidence more. Thanks to Igor, he did an incredible job, thanks to my team and sponsors and big thanks to my family and girlfriend because this weekend I struggled a lot and they were there to help so, thank you.”
