Breen well in control of ERC Rallye du Valais
Craig Breen is well in control of the Rallye International du Valais, having more than doubled his 15.4 second overnight lead on Leg 2’s morning loop of stages.
Together with Scott Martin, the Peugeot Rally Academy 208 T16 driver set fastest time on all the opening six stages. Florian Gonon (Peugeot 207 S2000) stopped that whitewash over the short Caserne stage, which was run adjacent to the service park in Sion, but with second quickest time on SS7 Breen has extended his advantage to 36.4 seconds.
“We are just driving and not taking any risks,” said Breen. “Two spare tyres, enjoying the nice Valais scenery, simple as that. It looks like we have the pace to manage the rally, so we are just trying to do that.”
OIivier Burri remains second after intercom and tyre problems in his Citroën DS3 RRC, while Alexey Lukyanuk (Ford Fiesta R5) continues to impress with third on his first rally in Switzerland.
Bruno Magalhães, Jonathan Hirschi (both 208 T16) and Miroslav Jakeš (Citroën DS3 R5) all hit the bridge on a particularly slippery section of SS6. Magalhães completed the stage with suspension damage, Hirschi continued after changing a broken wheel and Jakeš retired on the spot.
