Who is he? Subject to confirmation of the results by the FIA, 21-year-old Russian Gryazin is the 2018 ERC Junior Under 28 champion and European championship runner-up meaning, like older brother Vasily before him, Nikolay continues to prove that (young) age is no barrier to impressive performances.
Early promise: Aged 18, Gryazin, who competes with a Latvian licence and lives in the country’s capital Riga, was sixth on his ERC debut in Switzerland in 2015 on his maiden run in an R5 car and at the end of his first season of rallying following a switch from circuit racing.
Then what? He was battling for a podium in Cyprus in 2016 when he crashed having shown promise during a year of ERC Junior action (and an ERC3 win on Rally Rzeszow).
Big year: His 2017 campaign featured a full quota of ERC rounds plus other rallies in the Baltics and beyond and culminated in his first outright ERC win on Rally Liepāja aged 20.
More progress: ERC Junior Under 28 has been Gryazin’s focus in 2018 and resulted in class wins on Rally Islas Canarias, Barum Czech Rally Zlín, PZM Rally Poland and Raly Liepāja, plus outright wins on the latter two events. Away from the ERC, Gryazin has tackled a number of rallies in Europe, including Finland and Italy.
