The Spanish ace was in the podium fight on the season-opening 42nd Rally Sierra Morena - Córdoba Patrimonio de la Humanidad in April when he said: “Sometimes I am good, sometimes I am idiot” after he fell short of his high expectations during a stage.
However, Suárez proved to be more “good” than “idiot” as he secured third place on the Tarmac event with a typically strong performance before he topped the ERC Quote of the Year fan vote six months later.
Suárez, who won the ERC Quote of the Year after receiving 34 per cent of the public vote, was unable to attend the ERC Awards in Croatia on 5 October due to his busy schedule but sent the following video message.
“Thank you for this prize of the Quote of the Year. I am happy to be funny at the end of the stage because I was not happy. I hope next year to be in Córdoba with all of the ERC family and drive more well than idiot! Well done to the ERC for this amazing championship, well done to the guys who won something and took the big prizes. Keep pushing and work hard to the people who didn’t win something, work hard for next year because something will come.”
Suárez beat Philip Allen, Eyvind Brynildsen, Simone Campedelli and Mads Østberg to the fan award. Allen and Brynildsen were joint second with 18 per cent of the vote. Campedelli and Østberg shared joint fourth place with 15 per cent of the vote. Click HERE to find out what the other nominees said to get shortlisted.
