Lukyanuk mightily impressive Swiss ERC debut
Alexey Lukyanuk has recorded an incredibly impressive opening day on the Rallye International du Valais, with the Russian driver lying third overall on his first visit to Switzerland.
The Circuit of Ireland in April was Lukyanuk’s first full Tarmac rally, but he’s highlighted what a rapid learner he is by putting in a stunning performance on the very different snow-capped Alpine roads.
Despite a relatively cautious experience-gaining pace, he holds a podium position after Leg 1 in his Pirelli-shod H-Racing prepared Russian Performance Motorsport Ford Fiesta R5 – ahead of many asphalt specialists and local experts.
“It’s been an exciting day for us,” said Lukyanuk. “Actually we are learning quite a lot on these stages. The grip is changing a lot and is different from what we were expecting. It’s much more slippery in places and the rally with soft tyres is not so easy for me. I need to build my confidence and the feeling, because actually the tyres are perfect. I need to learn how to drive it well. At the beginning, I thought it was the tyres, but I now understand it’s me. Great rally, great stages, it’s quite interesting and we are pleased with our performance at the moment.”
