Dreams come true as Torn gets set for Rally2 move

Ken Torn will go from claiming back-to-back Junior ERC titles to pushing for outright honours when the 2022 FIA European Rally Championship season gets underway in northern Portugal this week.

By contesting Rally Serras de Fafe - Felgueiras - Cabreira e Boticas (11-13 March) in a Ford Fiesta Rally2, the Estonian will complete his climb from Rally4 to Rally2 level – via Rally3 – having driven with Fiesta power every step of the way.

For his elevation to the ERC’s top tier, Torn is joining the Polish C-Rally team to drive a Fiesta Rally2 under the Plon RT flag previously flown by Jarosław Koltun. Torn’s fellow countryman, Kauri Pannas, will co-drive.

“It’s a dream come true because for a long time we were starting to dream that we can drive with a Rally2 on the European stages and now, thanks to our supporters and sponsors, it’s going to be real and we hope to do the whole season,” said the 28-year-old.

Although he’s gained some experience in Rally2 machinery with selected outings in his homeland, Torn’s outing in Fafe will be his most significant yet. For that reason, he’s keeping his expectations in check.

“I’m not thinking about the result too much because I don’t have too much experience in Rally2, but definitely the aim is to enjoy the rally and get every kilometre and improve our speed,” he explained.

“Okay, never are we going into a rally to try for the last places, so definitely we have some hopes, but I don’t want to say what. I can’t expect anything because I don’t have the experience compared to the top guys from the European championship.”

Torn’s prize for winning the Junior ERC crown in 2021 was an FIA Junior WRC campaign in a Ford Fiesta Rally3 run by M-Sport Poland on Pirelli tyres. However, he reached an agreement to step up in performance in the ERC instead.

“My age is quite high to be a junior in the WRC so thanks to M-Sport Poland, they helped me jump into the Rally2 car and give me this chance,” he continued. “It became possible thanks to these guys, C-Rally and Jaroslaw Koltun.”
