Clio Trophy by Toksport WRT back by popular demand

New drivers, new events and new opportunities will combine to signal the start of the 2022 Clio Trophy by Toksport WRT at the Azores Rallye this week (25 - 27 March).

A joint initiative from Renault Sport Racing, the FIA European Rally Championship and FIA World Rally Championship title-winning outfit Toksport WRT, the one-make series provides the ultimate in accessible entry-level rallying and is back for a second season.

How it works?

Using the Renault Clio Rally5 on Michelin tyres as standard, the Clio Trophy by Toksport WRT takes place over five ERC events starting on the Azores Rallye and offers prizes and incentives to registered competitors.

Each Renault Clio Rally5 is housed within Toksport WRT’s dedicated service park structure where they are prepared and maintained to the exact same high standard by an expert team of technicians.

The Clio Trophy by Toksport WRT title winner gets a three-event FIA European Rally Championship prize drive in 2023 in a Renault Clio Rally4, while a round-by-round prize money package is shared out to the top four classified finishers on a descending scale of €4000, €2000, €1000 and €500. With no maximum age limit, a wide spectrum of participants is encouraged.

Back for more

Having impressed during the inaugural Clio Trophy by Toksport WRT season in 2021 – and relished the experience in the process – Paulo Soria and Ghjuvanni Rossi return to attempt to win the title claimed by Andrea Mabellini last season.

Soria finished runner-up to Italian Mabellini, while Corsican Rossi – who was also in title contention starting the final round – placed third.

“The Clio Trophy was helping me a lot last season, my first in Europe,” Soria said. “It’s very good to get introduced to events in Europe and the ERC. This year we will do the Clio Trophy again and some ERC rounds in a Clio Rally4 to prepare for 2023 when we hope to fight for the big positions in two-wheel drive.”

Newcomers on show

Five newcomers complete the expanded Clio Trophy by Toksport WRT line-up for 2022. Giorgio Cogni, the reigning Italian Junior champion, and compatriot Andrea Mazzocchi will go up against Turkey’s Emre Hasbay and Hungarian teenager Patrik Herczig, son of ERC podium finisher Norbert. Canary Islander Sergio Fuentes made selected ERC starts in 2020 and will also chase Clio Trophy by Toksport WRT success during the upcoming campaign.

Cogni said: “It will be a great chance and experience. I honestly do not know what to expect, the level will be high and I don't know what we may achieve in such demanding events. Let's see what comes out.”
