Sesks cool despite Azores frustrations

ERC Open frontrunner Martins Sesks remains positive about his Azores Rallye victory despite battling technical issues throughout the final day.

Sesks was also buoyant about the potential of his Proracing Rally Team-prepared Fabia. While the car lacks the grunt of the top-flight Rally2 machines, he is proving it can still be competitive on certain stages.

“I think this Rally2 Kit car has been really, really good in the past, and it’s still really, really fun to drive with,” he explained.

“We haven’t had any big problems - only the turbo pressure - in two rallies now. And I think [Fafe and Azores] are two of the hardest rallies in Europe.

“The team has made a really good effort to make this car right, and as you can see, it performs really well.”

The Latvian hotshot led the category from start to finish, but was hampered by a turbo pressure issue during Sunday’s finale which left his Skoda Fabia Rally2 Kit down on power.

Despite the drama, Sesks beat his nearest challenger Joan Vinyes by 5min 10.5sec as well as rounding off the top ten in the overall standings.

“It was nice to come back to the Azores,” he said. “The roads are always nice and really challenging to drive, but this was even more challenging.

“For sure, every time there is something that you can not change by yourself, or think there’s no impact you could make to it, it really makes you feel frustrated and helpless. On Sunday there were more downhills than uphill sections, so at least the power didn’t matter as much.

“For me, I believe that every experience is a good experience and it was also a good lesson for us - to make the best out of what you have,” he added.
