Jet-setting Soria explains European base

Clio Trophy by Toksport WRT championship leader Paulo Soria is living away from his native Argentina to concentrate on his driving aspirations.

Soria was the class of the one-make Clio field at last month’s Azores Rallye as he coaxed his Rally5 car home more than three minutes clear of his nearest rival.

Instead of jumping on a plane back to Gualeguaychú after the podium celebrations, he headed for his second home in Braşov, Romania. When he’s not there, he also resides in Augsburg, Germany, between rallies.

Speaking to following his Azores win, Soria explained the thought processes behind his move.

“Half of the time I am in Germany and half of the time I am in Romania,” he said. “It all started when I decided to do the European Championship.

“I have a very good friend in Germany and I decided to stay at his home at the beginning, and then I decided to mix between Germany and Romania.

“Right now I'm in Romania, but I am switching between these two countries. Where I come back to depends on where I’m going to rally, so after Azores I came back to Romania.

“It's always nice to come back to Argentina when I have a chance. I spent two months with my family and friends back home before Fafe, and now I’m back in Europe and it’s a nice feeling because it means that I’m doing rallies,” he added.

Soria’s Clio Trophy title bid resumes at Rally Islas Canarias next month (13 - 14 May). He finished fifth in class there last year and hopes to build his asphalt experience.

“We did the rally last year with the Clio Rally4, and for sure it was a good experience. I haven’t done too many rallies on Tarmac so it will be quite difficult, but I think the knowledge we gained last year will help a lot.”
