Vita returns for Junior ERC campaign

Mattia Vita will return to the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) at next month’s Rally Islas Canarias (13 - 14 May).

Vita will drive a Ford Fiesta Rally4 in the six-round Junior ERC season, which begins in May in the Canary Islands.

The Tuscany-based youngster previously raced against current Formula 1 drivers Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen in karting, but swapped the circuits for the stages in 2016.

He competed in the formerly-known ERC3 Junior category in 2018 with a Peugeot 208 R2, but has spent recent seasons honing his skills in the Italian Junior Championship.

“I am really excited to return to the ERC this year,” said the 25-year-old. “We have been working hard to make this happen and I feel much more prepared this time around with the experience I have gained over the past couple of years.

“I’m familiar with the Fiesta Rally4 package and the rallies currently on the calendar are ones I did in 2018, so I have some idea of what to expect from them.

“There is a lot of interest around the ERC right now and I know that we will face some strong competition, but I am eager to get started,” he added.

The Junior ERC is open to drivers aged 27 and under on 1 January 2022 in Rally4 and Rally5 cars using Pirelli tyres.

After round one, the calendar includes events in Poland, Latvia, Italy and the Czech Republic. The finale is expected to take place in September with a rally that will soon be announced.
