Romanian connection all set for Rally Islas Canarias

The Romanian participation in the FIA European Rally Championship will double in number at Rally Islas Canarias next week.

While Simone Tempestini and Sergiu Itu will continue their chase of outright ERC honours in their Keane Motorsport-run Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, an exciting brother and sister team join them on the entry list.

Nobert and Francesca Maior are rising stars in their homeland and have also impressed on a handful of FIA Junior ERC Championship appearances in recent seasons.

However, Rally Islas Canarias marks unchartered territory for the Maior siblings and their choice of Opel Corsa Rally4 marks a new departure from the Peugeot 208 Rally4 they have used in the ERC previously.

“We really wanted to be at the start of the first Junior ERC event of the season, so we made great efforts to be here,” Maior said.

“Finally, we did it with the help of some wonderful people around us. Even if we don't have a complete schedule confirmed at the moment, only Rally Islas Canarias is a sure deal, we are happy and appreciative for being able to do the rally and we will try to carry on with the good progress we made last year.”

Maior continued: “It will be our first Rally Islas Canarias, since last year it was the only one we didn't do, and it'll also be the first time we will compete in an Opel Corsa Rally4 provided by the Sports&You Canarias team.

“This year will be a fierce competition in Junior ERC, with many fast drivers registered at the start. We hope to be able to fight for the top places, but I am sure that the level will be very high so we will see what we can do and what pace we will have with the Opel Corsa Rally4.”

Meanwhile, Tempestini is preparing for his second Rally Islas Canarias start following his debut on the Las Palmas-based round in 2020. He will do so on the back of scoring an ERC career-best fourth overall on the Azores Rallye in March.
