Home hero Widłak tops ERC3 entry in Poland

ERC3 category leader Igor Widlak is preparing to face strong opposition on his home roads at Orlen 78th Rally Poland this week (11 - 12 June).

The Pole headlines an all-Ford Fiesta Rally3 entry for the Mikołajki-based fixture.

He starts the rally the off the back of a win at Rally Islas Canarias and leads the championship by a hefty 45 points. However, a number of returning drivers are also on the entry list and could pose a threat.

Speaking to FIAERC.com ahead of the event, Widlak admitted that the challenge won’t be an easy one.

“I have been looking forward to this rally for a long time,” he said. “I know the stages as well as the other ERC rallies because I started in the ERC without much experience.

“There will be a few guys returning in Poland and there will also be lots of local guys, so there will definitely be someone to fight with. The key to success will be a clean rally without many adventures,” he added.

One of those returning drivers is Estonia’s Kaspar Kasari, who holds second in the series despite missing the previous two rounds.

Kasari won the season opener in Fafe thanks to a huge final stage push which saw him overthrow Dmitry Feofanov, who also returns to action this weekend.

FIA Junior WRC regular Robert Virves also features on the entry in an M-Sport Poland-run Fiesta. He is targeting experience ahead of the Junior WRC’s next round in Estonia but will definitely be one to watch for victory.

Kenyan youngster Mcrae Kimathi - another Junior WRC driver - rounds off the entry. He, too, is using the event as a learning experience ahead of Estonia.
