Fortune favours Fiesta star Torn

Ken Torn’s podium at Orlen 78th Rally Poland provided a much-needed boost for his FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) campaign.

The Estonian endured a tough start to the season despite showing blistering pace at the opening two rounds in his Ford Fiesta Rally2.

Torn’s Rally Serras de Fafe - Felgueiras - Cabreira e Boticas was over on the first ‘proper’ stage when the car developed a water leak, while a mechanical issue sidelined him from the podium fight at the Azores Rallye.

After missing round three, the tables finally turned and the 28-year-old finished third in Poland, fending off championship leader Efrén Llarena with a flawless drive from start to finish.

“It’s good to collect one good result for the championship and hopefully this result can help us after a difficult beginning to the year,” Torn said after the rally. “We definitely need to be happy with our performance.

“It was definitely satisfying to finish on the podium. The pace was quite high and the other competitors did really hard and good work, so it was a really hard push from us over both days but it was actually quite enjoyable.”

Second pass conditions served up a number of challenges, with several crews getting caught out in deep ruts on high-speed sections.

In general, Torn enjoyed the stages and also confirmed plans to contest all remaining rounds this season.

“Generally the roads were not the worst,” he explained. “Okay, in some places it was quite rough, but generally it was not bad and I think it was the same for everybody.

“They were nice stages on really fast and flowing roads with some big jumps and it was really enjoyable to drive. For sure, it was good to be back in the championship and our plan is to do the rest of the season,” he added.
