Sesks gets Rally2 upgrade for home round

Team MRF Tyres driver Mārtiņš Sesks will step up to a Škoda Fabia Rally2 for Tet Rally Liepāja next week (2 - 3 July).

Sesks announced today (Monday 20 June) that he will join MRF’s top-flight ERC team for round five of the championship with a Fabia prepared by Latvian firm Sports Racing Technologies.

The 22-year-old will make the switch from the Fabia Rally2 Kit he has steered to two ERC Open category victories already this season, although this won’t be his first time behind the wheel of such machinery.

He drove an R5-specification Fabia in Liepāja in 2019 - where he finished third overall - and also at Rally di Roma Capitale the same year.

“I am really excited about this, but I have no expectations at the moment,” said Sesks. “We have some tests planned and after that I think we will have some more thoughts.

“I can only do my best to show my potential at Rally Liepāja and then we will see where it goes and how it goes. I think it’s now up to me to show my pace, and that’s it.

“We finished third overall in 2019, but that was already three years ago. Since then, we have been driving front-wheel drive cars, and then the [Rally2] Kit car since the start of this year. We have some tests planned, so we will see how things go,” he added.

Liepāja is a special rally for Sesks. Not only is it based in his native Latvia - but the host city is where he was born, grew up and still lives today.

It’s one of the fastest rallies of the season and the youngster is hoping local knowledge will give him the edge on the high-speed gravel roads.

“The special thing is that the rally itself is so fast,” he explained. "Usually, some drivers are quite scared from the high speeds, but for me, it’s exactly the opposite.

“I sometimes don’t feel as comfortable in technical rallies like the Azores, for example - where there are some hills or something like that. For me, driving at 160kph around trees and in the forest is fine because I am used to it.”
