Clio stars set for final round thriller

The Clio Trophy by Toksport WRT season hits fever pitch as Barum Czech Rally Zlín hosts the final round this week (26 - 28 August).

A champion will be crowned on Sunday afternoon - and that champion will receive an enviable prize package which includes a three-round FIA European Rally Championship prize drive in a Rally4 car in 2023.

Paulo Soria arrives to the Czech Republic as the title favourite. The Argentine has won all four rounds of the one-make Renault Clio Rally5 series so far and tops the standings by 37 points from closest challenger Sergio Fuentes.

Double points are awarded at this final round, which means up to 50 are on offer. A top-six finish would guarantee Soria the title - regardless of what anybody else does.

“This final round is a difficult one,” said Soria. “Last year we did it and we have experience, but it’s not easy. We have a nice lead in the championship, but of course we want to win.

“We are coming from Argentina and it’s not easy to be here, so that’s why we are always giving 200 per cent or more. We are here to do that and that’s the goal,” he added.

Italy’s Giorgio Cogni is the third and final driver still mathematically in contention for the title, but his chances are slim. To take the crown, he would need to win the rally whilst also being reliant on Soria and Fuentes retiring.

Andrea Mazzocchi returns to action following his high-speed crash at the previous round, while Emre Hasbay - who also had an off-road excursion in Italy - also features on the entry. Patrik Herczig and Ghjuvanni Rossi round off the seven-car list.
