Battistolli gets back behind the wheel

Italian star Alberto Battistolli will get back behind the wheel of a rally car for the first time since his Barum Czech Rally Zlín crash next week.

Battistolli and co-driver Simone Scattolin crashed out of last month's Czech Republic fixture when their Škoda Fabia Rally2 aquaplaned off the road and into a log pile, causing heavy damage to the car.

The 25-year-old hurt his left knee in the shunt while Scattolin suffered broken ribs, although both were released from hospital the next day and travelled home to recover.

Three weeks later, Battistolli is preparing to strap himself back into a rally car when he tests another Škoda in Italy next Monday (19 August).

“I am doing good," Battistolli told FIAERC.com. “The fracture is not going to prevent me from driving and I think everything will be fine. Simone is also feeling good, but obviously when you have broken ribs there is not much you can do - so he is resting and waiting!

“I am going to drive my Škoda on Monday - obviously not the crashed one - and it really is just a testing session with nothing too serious. I just want to get the feeling back in a car and see how I am feeling both mentally and physically, so it’s basically a test of everything.

“The place I will test is near to my home [in Vicenza] and I have to come straight home afterwards because I have a university examination on Thursday!”

Battistolli also revealed that, providing the test goes well, he plans to contest the final round of this year’s ERC at Rally RACC Catalunya - Costa Daurada. The event is based in Spain and takes place from 20 - 22 October.

“I think I will be there, but of course I cannot be 100 per cent sure,” he said. “At the moment I am just working towards getting back in the car and if I can be prepared for [Spain] then I will be extremely happy.”
