Data-driven Campedelli aims high with MRF Tyres and Orange1

Simone Campedelli is eager to make his mark both on and off the stages in 2023 as he returns to the FIA European Rally Championship with MRF Tyres and Orange1.

The popular Italian will pilot a Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo alongside co-driver Tania Canton, starting with Rally Serras de Fafe next week (10 - 12 March). His campaign is supported by Team MRF Tyres and Orange1, a leading manufacturer of electric motors.

Campedelli finished fifth in last year’s ERC, capping off his season with second overall on home soil at Rally di Roma Capitale. Alongside his ERC commitments, he also won the Italian Tarmac championship.

“First of all, I'm really proud to continue this long-term relationship with our partners,” Campedelli said. “We have been working with Orange1 for eight consecutive years now, and with MRF Tyres for three years. This means a lot to me.”

The 36-year-old is well-known for his technical expertise, particularly in terms of analysing data and working closely with engineers. His input helped MRF Tyres to make history in 2023, when the rubber giant became the first Indian manufacturer to win a top-level championship in European rallying.

While more podiums are the target this season, Campedelli also remains committed to continuing his role in testing and development.

“We finished fifth overall last year and we were really happy about it,” he explained. “Okay, we didn’t win the championship, but I think we played a key role last year.

“There are so many talented drivers right now who are so fast and so competitive, but only a few drivers are able to understand the dynamic of the vehicles and how to approach development sessions.

“We have been helping MRF to develop their tyres and giving good feedback to the R&D side of the company. It’s not always about being the fastest all the time - it’s important that we continue to be reliable for the development side of things also.”
