Canaries goes indoors for rally opener

Rally Islas Canarias will start their 47th edition in unique fashion with the rally-opening super special stage set to run through Gran Canaria Arena, better known as home of Liga ACB basketball team CB Gran Canaria.

The DISA Super Special Stage will be one of the most unique to ever take place in the 70-year history of the FIA European Rally Championship, with competitors required to navigate into Gran Canaria Arena and execute a donut before continuing with the stage.

Taking place at 22:05 CET on 4 May, the stage acts as the opening test of weekend at slightly under 2km. The remaining 188km competitive kilometres take place over Friday and Saturday, concluding with the powerstage at 18:05 CET on Saturday evening.

The unique stage is the culmination of hard work done between the rally organisers, stadium management and CB Gran Canaria - one of Spain's elite basketball teams. They current sit sixth in the Spanish championship and atop their group in the European-wide Eurocup.

To announce the special collaboration, rally organisers employed star player Khalifa Diop and local rally drivers Armide Martín and Emma Falcón, both of whom will compete in May's rally.
