Ten of the best: unusual ERC stage locations part one

With the opening stage of next month’s Rally Islas Canarias including a section inside a basketball stadium, FIAERC.com looks at 10 unusual settings for FIA European Rally Championship timed tests. Here are the first five.

Roman amphitheatre (above): Last July’s Rally di Roma Capitale began with the Colosseo ACI Roma stage. And while the 1.70km test didn’t actually venture inside the world’s largest amphitheatre, completed in 80 AD no less, it did get very close.

Beach (below): The Love Cyprus Golden Stage 2 on the 2016 CNP Asfalistiki Cyprus Rally finished on a beach with the time control located adjacent to a seaside bar. And after going fastest by more than 10sec it was the perfect location for Alexeys Lukyanuk and Arnautov to celebrate a dominant victory.

Quarry (below): Constructed inside a giant quarry, the Grupo Marques super special stage on the Azores Rallye is a big hit among drivers and fans alike.

Hotel grounds (below): Hotel Gołębiewski in Mikołajki is not only the setting of ORLEN Rally Poland’s service park and event headquarters, it’s also home to a purpose-built super special, the Mikołajki Arena where ERC drivers go head to head for top honours.

Bus terminal: Barum Czech Rally Zlín’s ever-popular super special, which runs through its host city’s streets, includes a blast through a bus terminal, closed of course for the occasion.

Visit FIAERC.com tomorrow for details of five more unusual stage locations.
