Romanian ERC aces score and win during big week

Simone Tempestini and Norbert Maior were able to build on their impressive showings in the FIA European Rally Championship in Poland with victories on home soil during a successful week behind the wheel for the Romanian drivers.

Co-driven by Sergiu Itu, Tempestini finished eighth overall on ORLEN 79th Rally Poland on 21 May and then took victory on the Romanian championship-counting Raliul Argeșului six days later.

Maior, meanwhile, finished a strong second among the FIA Junior ERC contenders in Poland before he claimed class victory in his homeland, three places behind Tempestini, his fellow Napoca Rally Academy member.

Following his Poland points, Tempestini said: “We are happy, it’s a nice rally and we enjoyed a lot each kilometre. It’s one of our favourites and we had some really good stages. We struggled a bit in others with the feeling on the rough sections but at the end we are quite happy.”

Maior, who is co-driven by his sister Francesca, likened his Poland podium in the Hankook-equipped Junior ERC category as a “win”.

“For me it’s a win, for sure it’s a win,” Maior said. “If you ask me two weeks ago if I will go in Poland I would say no because we don’t have the budget and it’s difficult. But we have a strong team who help us a lot to come here and look where we are now in Junior ERC, we are on the podium so it’s completely a successful weekend. We tried to push when we needed but we could also slow down to manage our gap.”

Tet Rally Liepāja hosts round four of the 70th-anniversary ERC season from 16 - 18 June.
