ERC ace Hungary for home success

Martin László is preparing to fly the FIA European Rally Championship flag in his native Hungary a little earlier than planned.

Rally di Roma Capitale marks the start of the ERC’s season-deciding Tarmac trio, which culminates with the return of Rally Hungary to the schedule from 6- 8 October.

And László will be hoping to gain the upper hand on his ERC rivals on the back of what will be three consecutive gravel events by the time BAUHAUS Royal Rally of Scandinavia takes place from 6 - 8 July.

“It’s our home rally, we are preparing for that and we want to win at home,” the 26-year-old László said of this weekend’s Mecsek Rallye.

By competing on the Hungarian championship event, László will have a clearer view of the current level of the home-based competition likely to contest Hungary’s ERC season finale.

The ToppCars Rally Team driver will star the event fresh his confidence-boosting top-20 finish on the ERC-counting Tet Rally Liepāja last weekend.

“I was happy because the main goal was to be at the finish after the Poland and Fafe crash,” László said. “I didn’t want to make any risk so I was driving through quite safely. We got to the end without any problems, we didn’t have any puncture or big mistakes so I happy for that although I am not completely happy with the result. But we learned a lot and this is the most important thing for now.”

Several top Hungarian drivers with ERC experience also appear on the Mecsek Rallye entry list. They include Kristóf Klausz, Frigyes Turán, Ádám Velenczei, Ferenc Vincze Jr and Adrienn Vogel.

ERC regular László is contesting this weekend’s Mecsek Rallye in his home city of Pécs as he looks to gain crucial asphalt experience ahead of next month’s Rally di Roma Capitale – while also bidding for a top result alongside co-driver Dávid Berendi.
