The Hungarian, who turned 30 last month, was making up lost time on Rally Islas Canarias when he and co-driver Attila Nagy left the road at high speed and rolled several times on the fourth stage of the Tarmac event in May.
Although both crew escaped injury, the severity of the crash meant their car could not be salvaged and a replacement was needed.
However, with limited funds available, Csomós was forced to sit out the ERC events in Poland, Latvia and Sweden. He’s only competing in Italy next week after fans responded to a fundraising appeal.
“I’m at a loss for words after the great support we’ve received from our fans,” said Csomós, “It’s truly amazing that 900 fans have raised the budget for a new shell through crowd funding.
“Without their help we wouldn’t be able to continue the ERC this season. But we are back and I promise we will race with all our heart and soul for our fans. It’s a great thing to race in the ERC, and we've missed it so much.I want to say a big, big thank you to our fans and köszönjük srácok in Hungarian.”
While Csomós will be back competing, co-driver Nagy’s appearance in Rome will be in a new capacity as team co-ordinator, which has created a new opening for Viktor Ban to take over navigating duties.
“After these long years working as co-driver and also a team co-ordinator on every competition, I need some rest now,” said Nagy, who was also involved in a sizeable accident alongside Csomós on Barum Czech Rally Zlín last season. “And, of course, those two heavy crashes in eight months were neither good for my peace of mind. I’m with the team mentally and also physically, but just as a team co-ordinator.”
Csomós completed a successful shakedown run in his replacement Fabia Rally2 Evo this week. Rally di Roma Capitale takes place from 28 - 30 July.
