Why more than a Bán will help home ERC hero Csomós

Hungarian hero Miklós Csomós won’t just bring big speed to the victory fight on the FIA European Rally Championship season decider next week – he’ll also come armed with plenty of local knowledge.

Csomós, known by his fans as ‘Mixi’, is from the Zemplén region where the fourth edition of Rally Hungary will take place from 6 - 8 October. His co-driver, Viktor Bán, reckons this familiarity of the challenging Zemplén terrain could make the difference in the battle to finish on top in the ERC.

“It’s our country, it’s our stages, Mixi lives on this point of the stages, and we would like to do everything that we can do to win,” said Bán, who linked up with Csomós for Rally Rally di Roma Capitale in July and also partnered his fellow Hungarian on Barum Czech Rally Zlín last month.

Csomós and Bán finished a career-high second on the Czech round in their GR Motosport Kft Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo. They took a stage win and set six top-three stage times during a fine display against rivals in more modern machinery.

“When I started this rally I was never thinking it could be this position, second place is incredible,” Bán said. “I cried for 10 minutes afterwards and also on the podium. This day was for me difficult inside, I was just waiting for the last minutes, waiting to the end, but then we were very happy. We are good friends for a long time and his driving is fantastic. Sometimes he can be a little bit crazy-fast but then he understands he needs to slow down and he can do this, no problem.”

Csomós and Bán will warm up for Rally Hungary with an outing on the HELL Diósgyőr Rally in Miskolc from 29 September-1 October.
