Two big wins in a week for ERC’s Campedelli

Simone Campedelli was a winner not once but twice during an epic week for the Italian FIA European Rally Championship regular.

After winning the Stage-end Quote of the Year at the FIA European Rally Championship Awards Evening held in Budapest last Monday (9 October), Campedelli returned to the wheel of his Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo from 13 - 14 October to secure the Campionato Italiano Rally Asfalto (Italian Tarmac Rally Championship) crown for the second year running.

Co-driven by Tania Canton, Campedelli, 37, put the title beyond doubt with victory on Rally Città di Bassano, their second triumph of the season.

They were in second position until fellow ERC regulars Andrea Mabellini and Virginia Lenzi dropped back after they hit a rock and broke a wheel rim on their Fabia. Mabellini and Lenzi eventually finished in third place.

Meanwhile, ERC fans chose Campedelli’s comment on Rally Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto in March as the Stage-end Quote of the Year through an online vote. Although Campedelli is ranked among the ERC’s fastest drivers – he was a stage winner in the championship in 2023 no less – he admitted that keeping up with his rivals on the opening round of the season in northern Portugal was a struggle.

“It looks like I’m a good old man,” he said at the time. “The guys in front of me are crazy, I tried what I can but the level is so scary, so shitting in my pants all the time.”

After being chosen by the ERC fans as the winner of the Stage-end Quote of the Year award, Campedelli, pictured above with eight-time world champion co-driver Julien Ingrassia and below with ERC All Live's Becs Williams, joked: “Maybe I have the wrong career, maybe I should stay on TV! We hope to be back stronger next year when I should stay more focused on the driving than on the quotes!”

Campedelli helped Efrén Llarena and Mārtiṇš Sesks win the FIA European Rally Championship for Teams for Team MRF Tyres. He also scored Drivers’ championship points in Poland, Latvia and Italy.
