ERC @ 70: Drivers who raced and rallied part two

Henrik Lundgaard: The 2000 ERC champion tried European competition of a different kind when he contested the FIA European Touring Car Cup at Adria in Italy in 2007 (pictured above). After retiring from the first race he placed second in Race 2. The Dane was also successful in his domestic touring car championship. His sons Christian and Daniel are successful circuit racers.  

Andrea Mabellini: Twice a title winner in the ERC, Mabellini’s introduction to four-wheeled motorsport was in circuit racing in his native Italy although it wasn’t long before he followed his father Renato into rallying.

Sir Stirling Moss: While the late, great Sir Stirling Moss was best known as a circuit racer, winning 16 Formula One grands prix, he contested selected ERC events in the 1950s. His sister Pat Moss-Carlsson won three ERC rallies.

Thierry Neuville: The World Rally Championship title contender, who took part on five ERC events earlier in his career, won on his ADAC TCR Germany debut at the Nürburgring in 2019. A watching Gabriele Tarquini, the winner of the FIA World Touring Car Cup in 2018, said afterwards: “He controlled all the race and was also incredible in the second race when there was big rain.”   

Laurent Pellier: Before he started winning things in rally cars, including the 2022 FIA ERC Junior Championship title, Pellier raced in French F4.  

Walter Röhrl: Germany’s ERC champion of 1974 won his class at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1981 during an illustrious career.

Carlos Sainz Sr: Although football and squash were popular pursuits for a younger Sainz (pictured above), he tried Formula Ford before launching his ultra-successful rallying career, which included seven wins from 23 ERC starts.  

Stéphane Sarrazin: A two-time Le Mans Series champion (pictured below) who has also made one start in Formula One claimed victory on his last ERC appearance, the Tour de Corse in 2014.

Ricardo Teodósio: The double Portuguese champion, who led the Fafe season opener in March after winning the opening super special, used to be a racing driver, with stints in Formula Ford and Formula Opel appearing on a lengthy and impressive CV.  

Henri Toivonen: A winner of six ERC events and destined for the world title until his fatal crash in Corsica in 1986, Toivonen test-drove a Formula One car and raced for Eddie Jordan in Formula 3. Brother Harri, who also won in the ERC, tried circuit racing as did their father Pauli, the 1968 ERC champion.
