ERC 2024 event guide: V Rally Hungary

The countdown to the 2024 FIA European Rally Championship is well and truly under way. And with V Rally Hungary revving up to host the season opener in less than 100 days from now, here’s an overview of just some of what to expect when the ERC stops off in the city of Veszprém.

What? V Rally Hungary, 2024 FIA European Rally Championship Round 1 of 8, 2024 FIA Junior ERC Championship Round 1 of 6

When? 12 - 14 April   Where? Veszprém, Hungary (15 kilometres north of Lake Balaton, 115 kilometres southeast of Budapest)

What’s new? Having run on asphalt since its first edition in 2019, Rally Hungary will be gravel only in 2024 with the event relocating to the city of Veszprém, which has hosted rallies for more than three decades.

What’s in store? Challenging gravel stages around Lake Balaton await the ERC stars and their cars. As ERC regulars Erik Cais, Martin László and Filip Mareš can confirm, this won’t be an early-season ride after they contested the Mikulás Rallye last month. Also based in Veszprém, the event used two stages that ran in a similar area earmarked for V Rally Hungary and provided a tough but exciting test.

What the organisers have said? Kornél Őry, President of Rally Hungary Organising Committee: “We are very pleased we will be organising the season opener in and around Veszprém with gravel stages in the region of Veszprém-Balaton. It is too early to talk about the stages, but we can promise that there will be no shortage of excitement.”

What the drivers have said? Miklós Csomós, ERC podium finisher: “I am very happy that the ERC will start in Hungary, it means there will be a lot of competitors in each category. I really love gravel races, so I am looking forward to the start. It may be harder to win this race. On the one hand, the field will be much more populated, and on the other hand, I think they are much faster on gravel than on asphalt. But surely, we will not go to Veszprém with our hands up.”
