ERC calendar slot perfect for Canarias

Hosting the first asphalt round of the 2024 FIA European Rally Championship is the perfect fit for Rally Islas Canarias.

Based in Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria, the event is scheduled to take place from 2 - 4 May, its ERC traditional calendar slot.

Germán Morales, who heads up the event’s organising committee through the Todo Sport firm, said he couldn’t be happier with the date of the 48th Rally Islas Canarias.

“As has happened on several occasions, Rally Islas Canarias will be the first event of the year on Tarmac, an aspect that has always fitted well and has allowed us to enjoy really interesting entry lists,” he said.

Rally Islas Canarias joined the FIA European Rally Championship for the first time in 1982 when it achieved coefficient 10 status under the previous calendar format.

It became a fully-fledged round in 2013 and has been an ever-present on the ERC roster since 2016, including in 2020 and 2021 when restrictions resulting from the global health pandemic led to it running in the November of those years.

“We maintain our place on the calendar, something that is positive for the teams and also for the fans,” Morales continued. “We had been working on the 2024 edition for weeks [prior to the] confirmation of the entire European calendar by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.”

Morales and his team broke new ground in 2023 when a section of the opening 1.88-kilometre Las Palmas de Gran Canaria super special stage was routed through the Gran Canaria Arena’s basketball court.

Rally Islas Canarias follows on from the gravel-based V Rally Hungary, which opens the 2024 ERC season from 12 - 14 April. It’s one of five sealed-surface events that make up this season’s FIA European Rally Championship and also counts for the FIA Junior ERC Championship.
