Paddon marks 10 years of Hyundai power by highlighting ERC success

Hayden Paddon has marked the start of the 10-year anniversary of his partnership with Hyundai New Zealand by highlighting his FIA European Rally Championship success in 2023.

Co-driven by John Kennard, New Zealander Paddon became the first driver not flying a European flag to take the ERC title courtesy of one victory and five podium finishes aboard his BRC Racing Team Hyundai i20 N Rally2. His win on the Fafe season opener last March was the first for Hyundai in the ERC.

Paddon wrote on Facebook: “This year marks our 10-year anniversary with Hyundai New Zealand – a partnership that I’m incredibly proud and thankful of.

“I remember the first discussion being about how I wanted to create a long-term, loyal partnership, in the same way my idol Possum Bourne did. And what a 10 years it has been. Together we have achieved a huge amount and have raised the bar. Best bit is, there is still so much more to come.”

He continued: “Some of our achievements with Hyundai NZ have included the WRC win and podiums, four New Zealand drivers’ titles and Hyundai’s first ever victory in the ERC.

“Hyundai is a brand and product that I’m incredibly proud to represent, along with the family of people within Hyundai NZ and dealers throughout the country. Looking forward to what 2024 and the future holds.”

A post from Hyundai New Zealand read: “It’s been a whole decade of incredible adventures with our Kiwi rally legend, Hayden Paddon. Time flies when you’re breaking barriers and making history. From dusty trails to the podium peaks, we’ve shared an epic journey since 2014. Hayden, we’re beyond grateful for the passion, skill, and dedication you’ve brought to every twist and turn. Here’s to the road ahead.”

Meanwhile, Paddon’s achievement in winning the ERC title in 2023 was further recognised by his inclusion on the initial shortlist for the Sportsman of the Year prize at the annual Halberg Awards in New Zealand. He was nominated along with racing drivers Brendon Hartley and Shane van Gisbergen with van Gisbergen eventually chosen as a finalist. The winner of the 61st Halbergs will be announced on 14 February.
