ERC Take Five with Germán Morales

An integral component of the Rally Islas Canarias organising committee, Germán Morales took time out of his busy schedule preparing round two of the 2024 FIA European Rally Championship from 2 - 4 May to answer FIAERC.com’s questions. This is what he had to say.

How are preparations going for this year’s Rally Islas Canarias?
“We are already at full speed, there are only three months left and with these kinds of rallies you have to take a lot of time to prepare. In addition, we are working on some news that fans will surely like. But in general terms, everything is going as planned.”

There are always exciting changes and initiatives each year – what can you tell us about the plans for May’s event?
“There will be news, but we cannot communicate right now. Fans should stay tuned because very soon we are going to announce things that will surprise them. As for the itinerary, Friday's leg will be the one with the most novelties, with a demanding and spectacular route.”

Rally Islas Canarias has been a long-term fixture on the ERC calendar but why is the ERC so important to Rally Islas Canarias?
“There are more than 40 years of history between the FIA ERC and Rally Islas Canarias. These last editions have been spectacular, both in sports and in terms of impact. We must not forget that the Canary Islands are a tourist destination and the rally is a way to reach more people. About sport, it has allowed the Canarian fans to meet promising young drivers who today are world icons.”

So far, what is your best memory of your time organising Rally Islas Canarias?
“There are many memories, many moments that I keep in my memory. But, perhaps, at the same level I would put the achievements, such as having consolidated the event or making the public understand that safety is the most important thing to continue aspiring to greater heights. As a souvenir, the super special stage in the Gran Canaria Arena and its surroundings was an excellent combination of spectacle and promotion of the event. I believe that these latest editions are part of the best era in the history of Rally Islas Canarias.”

For fans who have never visited the event before, what will they experience and what are the main attractions?
“In our archipelago there is a great tradition in the world of rallies. Every year more tourists come to visit us, more fans, attracted by the show, but also by our weather, the beauty of our island and the good atmosphere that surrounds the event. It is a rally that is liked, the special stages are liked and the island is liked.”
