Big blow for early Canarias leader Cachón

Alejandro Cachón’s hopes of a maiden FIA European Rally Championship victory look to be over after the early Rally Islas Canarias pacesetter dropped out of contention with a damaged front-right tyre on SS5.

Cachon, piloting a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 on Pirelli tyres, started the repeat of the Agüimes - Santa Lucía stage leading by 3.8sec over ahead of Yoann Bonato, the 2023 Rally Islas Canarias winner.

But he completed the 14.83km test 40.6sec slower than his French rival to drop to outside the top 10 in the overall classification.

“I don’t know [what happened],” Spaniard Cachón said. “There are a lot of rocks on the inside, maybe I touched something and I punctured.”
