Kohn keeping ERC3 rival Charpentier at bay

Filip Kohn will start the deciding leg of BAUHUAS Royal Rally of Scandinavia just 3.2sec ahead of Tristan Charpentier in the battle for top FIA ERC3 Championship honours in Sweden.

The closely-matched duo, who are also eligible for the ERC Fiesta Rally3 Trophy, head Kerem Kazaz with Igor Widłak and Martin Ravenščak filling out the remaining places.

Charpentier began Friday’s action leading by 1.0sec after he set the pace through the BAUHAUS super special stage on Thursday evening.

The French former single-seater racer was quickest again on SS2 before Kazaz topped the times on SS3 after which Charpentier’s lead over Kohn stood at 3.3sec with Kazaz 8.6sec off the pace.

Kohn was quickest on SS4 and SS5 to return to service in Karlstad 1.0sec behind Charpentier. Charpentier responded on SS6 but Kohn went quickest in the rain of SS7 to move into first place by 3.2sec.

Charpentier underlined his threat with a stage best on SS8 before Kohn hit back on SS9 with his fourth fastest time of the day.

“It’s my first time here and it’s quite fast for me so I need to learn these stages,” said Czech driver Kohn, the V-Híd Rally Hungary winner in April. “I don’t have too much mileage on the super-fast gravel so it’s just a learning curve for me. But we tried to push more and it was feeling good. The car feels really good but we were the first smaller car on the road so the lines aren’t too good for us and we were struggling a bit with the lines. Otherwise it was quite good.”

Charpentier added: “It's been quite tough, flat-out everywhere and it’s really hard to get used to it. The super special stage yesterday was quite nice, we had fun and put it in P1 which gave us confidence this morning. This morning was about getting up to speed slowly and we managed to keep the lead but then it was about trying to improve in the afternoon. For me it’s only one year of rally so I don’t have any expectations, I just take it rally by rally and see how it goes.”

BAUHAUS Royal Rally of Scandinavia’s second leg tomorrow (Saturday) covers 107.94 competitive kilometres and features two loops of four stages run either side of service in Karlstad. The 5.83-kilometre Ölme stage is up first from 07:42 local time with the event-deciding Power Stage due to begin at 16:05.
