Kohn holds on for ERC3 win double

Filip Kohn won a thrilling fight for FIA ERC3 Championship success having battled Tristan Charpentier for top spot throughout BAUHAUS Royal Rally of Scandinavia.

As he did on V-Híd Rally Hungary in April, Kohn also claimed the ERC Fiesta Rally3 Trophy honours alongside British co-driver Tom Woodburn.

But such was Charpentier’s determination, Kohn’s winning margin after 17 stages was a scant 11.4sec with Czech Kohn taking nine fastest stage times to the seven notched up by Frenchman Charpentier.

“It’s amazing for me,” said Kohn, who drove a Pirelli-equipped Ford Fiesta Rally3. “For the first time to have such a good battle, one second here, two tenths there, it’s crazy. We pushed on the long stage [this morning] and managed to have some gap but it has been really tough and we needed to keep it up to the finish to take the win. We are really happy but you needed a lot of commitment to win this rally.”

Charpentier, who was making his ERC debut having switched to rallying from single-seater racing last year, was fastest on Thursday evening’s BAUHAUS super special stage and led until SS7 on Friday.

He said: “We had a problem at the start so we went easy on the Power Stage. For sure it’s been really close since the beginning of the rally, either I have the stage win or he has the stage win and we are just bouncing like in tennis. I didn’t have any expectations before the start, this rally was about learning and finding the confidence.”

Turkish teenager Kerem Kazaz overcame a spin, smashed drivers’ window and a gearchange issue to finish third, his second ERC3 podium of the season.

Poland’s Igor Widłak, the 2022 ERC3 champion, held his championship advantage in fourth place after an event he described as “good, very fast, scary but with a smile”.

Martin Ravenśčak completed the ERC3 order alongside co-driving sister Dora. “They were very fast stages,” said the Croatian. “We had a few big moments so we were surviving, trying to finish and get the experience of the roads so we can be more prepared for Estonia.”

Delfi Rally Estonia hosts round four of the ERC3 season and the third event of the Fiesta Rally3 Trophy from 5 - 7 July.
