Armstrong climbing high on ERC finale

Jon Armstrong has shot from seventh to third on the deciding leg of Rally Silesia for what could be his first podium finish in the FIA European Rally Championship.

Back-to-back stage wins this morning have elevated the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver into a career-best third with four stages of the ERC season showdown left to run.

The M-Sport Ford Fiesta Rally2 driver is 35.2sec behind second-placed Andrea Mabellini and 41.3sec adrift of leader Hayden Paddon, who remains on course to become ERC champion for the second time in a row. However, home hero Miko Marcyk will start SS11 2.6sec down on Armstrong in the battle for the final place on the Rally Silesia podium.

Simone Tempestini started leg two in third place for Team MRF Tyres but went off the road at high speed 4.6km from the start of the 11.46 Marklowice Górne test. His exit, the cause of which has yet to be determined, initially promoted Marczyk into third with Armstrong climbing from sixth to fourth on the same run after he moved ahead of Mathieu Franceschi, the only driver who can beat Paddon to ERC title gold.

The first run of the 11.87km Silesian Voivodeship stage, which forms the rally-deciding Power Stage when it’s repeated at 16:05 local time, is up next from 11:05 amid local points of rain. Crews will then head to the Tyre Fitting Zone at the Carbonarium Moszczenica before the morning trio of stages are repeated in the afternoon. Click HERE for live timing.
