ERC Expert View: Paddon picked as media’s Driver of the Year

Hayden Paddon’s capture of back-to-back FIA European Rally Championship titles has earned the New Zealander yet more plaudits after several ERC media representatives voted him their Driver of the Year for 2024.

They chose the BRC Racing Team driver ahead of a host of nominees, which included Jon Armstrong, Calle Carlberg, Mathieu Franceschi, Mille Johansson, Filip Kohn, Andrea Mabellini, Miko Marczyk, Filip Mareš and Max McRae.

Rally.tv live stage-end reporter Peter MacKay selected the Pirelli-equipped Hyundai i20 N Rally2 driver. He said: “Hayden and co-driver John Kennard fought through one of the toughest seasons in their lengthy career with trademark grit. Two final stage punctures and a struggle with car performance backed Paddon into a tight corner by mid-season. On Saturday night on Barum Czech Rally Zlín, the 2023 champion was close to throwing in the towel in excruciating frustration. However, with typical antipodean tenacity, the Kiwi refused to give up. After a breakthrough with his Hyundai i20 N Rally 2, Paddon decimated the field at JDS Machinery Rali Ceredigion to take control of the 2024 season. A final podium on Rally Silesia finished the job. In his two years in the ERC, Paddon has raised the bar on and off the stages and has set a fine example for the championships up and coming stars to follow.”

Rallyeslalom.com reporter Niccolò Budoia also chose Paddon as his ERC Driver of the Year. Explaining his decision, the Italian said: “It was not for his second ERC title but for the way it came. It hasn’t been his easiest season, from the punctures in Hungary and Scandinavia’s Power Stages to the struggles he faced on Tarmac. But he never gave up, and in Wales he showed his masterclass ad he won almost two minutes ahead of everybody else, almost securing his second championship. It’s been unforgettable, and I felt as a true honour being able to live those moments.”

Motorsport News’ ERC correspondent Graham Lister was in agreement with Budoia and MacKay but also highlighted the progress Jon Armstrong made in his first full season at Rally2 level as being worthy of recognition.

Becs Williams, Rally.tv’s lead ERC commentator, opted for championship runner-up Mathieu Franceschi.
