Stengg on a gravel-driving learning mission in ERC Junior U27
Learning to drive on gravel again will be Roland Stengg’s priority when the FIA European Rally Championship finale in Latvia begins on Friday.
Austrian Stengg hasn’t competed on a loose-surface event for more than one year, meaning Rally Liepāja will be all about reacclimatising to gravel and building his experience in the Opel ADAM R2 he shares with compatriot Claudia Dorfbauer.
“We know it’s going to be very difficult because my last gravel event was over a year ago and I don’t have much experience on the surface at all,” said Stengg, who placed fifth on his last appearance in the Pirelli-supported FIA ERC Junior Under 27 Championship in Czech Republic. “Unfortunately, we missed Poland and gravel testing is very limited in Austria as we don’t have the right roads for that.
“I still think we’ve improved a lot in terms of speed and consistency, and we want to keep this trend rolling. I’m also really looking forward to driving with Claudia again. She did a perfect job until now and what’s also important is she keeps calm and concentrated when it’s getting hectic.”
