Mixed fortunes for ERC big guns after first week of Greatest Driver voting

Big guns came and went during the first week of voting by fans of the FIA European Rally Championship to determine the ERC Greatest Driver of all time.

While Luca Rossetti, Kajetan Kajetanowicz, Sobiesław Zasada (pictured above) and Patrick Snijers all made it through to the quarter-final stage, Rauno Aaltonen, Jan Kopecký (pictured below), Antonio Zanini and Bernard Darniche have been eliminated.

The online poll, part of the ERC’s 70th anniversary celebrations, is a true battle of the legends with 16 selected for the shootout to determine who is the best of them all.

FIAERC.com has taken a data-based approach to pick out 12 drivers who have won the coveted European Rally Championship at least two times. Four wildcards, based on their impact during a certain ERC era, were also selected.

Employing bracketology, voting continues at 11:00 on Monday when the late Gunnar Andersson, ERC champion in 1958 and 1963 goes up against Dario Cerrato, who bagged two ERC titles of his own in 1985 and 1987.

Following this Monday’s poll, there will be a further three ERC Greatest Driver votes in the round of 16 with the quarter-finals getting under way on Monday 20 November.

Results so far:

Rauno Aaltonen versus Luca Rossetti: Rossetti wins after receiving 59 % of the vote

Kajetan Kajetanowicz versus Jan Kopecký: Kajetanowicz wins with 68 % of the vote

Sobiesław Zasada versus Antonio Zanini: Zasada wins with 76 % of the vote

Bernard Darniche versus Patrick Snijers: Snijers wins with 79 % of the vote
