Solans stormed to an early championship lead after steering his Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 to victory by almost one-minute at the Fafe season opener.
That dream start soon took a downturn when financial struggles sidelined him for round two at the Azores Rallye and Solans has been working hard to get his title campaign back on track ever since.
The Spaniard’s efforts have rewarded him with a return to action in Las Palmas next week, although plans for further outings are still in progress.
“It has not been easy, and next week is still not done 100 per cent,” Solans told FIAERC.com. “The team, the Catalan Federation and my sponsors FlashLED are helping me a lot and it’s because of them that we are doing Rally Islas Canarias.
“As you can imagine, it’s not good when you know that you are leading the championship and you’re sitting at home watching from the TV. At the moment, I’m taking things rally by rally.
“I would love to tell you that I have a sponsor for the whole season, but I can not tell you right now because I am still working on it,” he added.
Solans’ Azores absence dropped him to third in the championship. Leader Armindo Araújo is not competing next week, which leaves second-placed Efrén Llarena his nearest rival.
The 30-year-old remained modest on his victory hopes, stating that he expects a number of drivers to be in the fight and that weather conditions could prove pivotal.
“I’m very happy to be there again and to run on Tarmac, so we will do our best and try to continue with the championship contenders,” he mused.
“We have to see, because sometimes it can be raining at the top of the mountains but at sea level it’s perfect and sunny with no clouds or anything. Because of that, it’s very difficult to do the tyre choice.
“I think it will be difficult to predict the winner or the people who will be fighting for the win, but for sure there are some fast Tarmac drivers there and they are all quite impressive.”
