An FIA European Rally Championship title in your first year at international level. How much satisfaction does that give you?
“It was my first time competing out of the Baltic countries, first time in ERC, first time on Tarmac so a lot of first things. We are here at the end of season, so many podiums, especially on Tarmac rallies. I didn’t expect that I could be so competitive, but I was competitive very fast.”
You started the Croatia Rally season finale needing five points to take the crown. Was it as straightforward as it sounds?
“We had some technical problems after we spun on the first stage [of the final day] and damaged the suspension, so the whole day was driving slowly and trying not to make any more damage to the car. It was a small mistake, we have a spin, and we hit the bank with the right rear. After the stage we saw we have some damage to the suspension but nothing big and by driving carefully we knew it would stay like that. After that huge stress we were here at the finish, we are the champions and that’s the point.”
You came into the season with no Tarmac experience. What level of challenge did that present?
“I was scared about Tarmac rallies because I knew we had good pace on gravel, but I didn’t know anything about Tarmac. Rally di Roma Capitale was crucial this season because we gained the most points against the competitors.”
How did you adapt to and excel on Tarmac so quickly?
“I really like new things and I’m very fast in learning and that was the most important here. We learn a lot in a very short space of time, that was the thing that we started driving fast on Tarmac. There is still a lot of room to go but we are improving, of course, but for the moment I’m really happy with the pace on Tarmac.”
As well as becoming ERC champion, you also won the ERC Fiesta Rally3 Trophy and a Rally2 prize drive on an ERC event. How good is this initiative from M-Sport Poland, particularly for young drivers like you?
“It was very equal, and the prizes help a lot with the budget from rally to rally. The Fiesta Rally3 is very comfortable, I have done a lot of rallies and kilometres with the car, I really like the style of it, you have plenty of set-up changes you can do and really set up this car for the driving style. You can really improve your skills. The experience [of driving a Rally2 car] will be crucial, getting the experience and some knowledge, I’m really happy with that.”
